Kempston Climate Change Group are establishing a wildflower meadow in a local park

A group of Kempston volunteers and Town Councillors has begun establishing a wildflower meadow in a local park. With assistance from Bedford Borough Council’s Environmental Services team, who arranged for a close mowing of the site, members of Kempston Climate Change Group raked up an area of the Wood Park (situated between Margetts Road and Jowitt Avenue) and planted Yellow Rattle seed. The cost of the seed was met through a grant from the ward funds of Kempston Central and East Borough Councillors Kay Burley and Mohammed Nawaz.

Once established in exposed soil, Yellow Rattle helps to supress grass, enabling other species of native wildflowers and plants to flourish. The seed will now lie dormant over the winter months before germinating in the spring. The meadow will take several seasons to establish, but in time should become a valuable, biodiverse home for bees and insect life.

Kempston Climate Change Group was established in 2019 and has so far worked to raise environmental awareness and publicise local recycling and reuse initiatives. The group plans to establish other meadows locally and will also continue to work on a range of other schemes to improve Kempston’s environment. Anyone interested in joining the group’s activities is encouraged to contact Cllr Ross Purves on rmpkempston@gmail.com.
